Introduction to IITs

Indian Institute of Technologies, commonly known as IITs, are public educational institutes in India. IITs have produced many global leaders, engineers, scientists and entrepreneurs. Almost every science student in India who chooses mathematics as a subject, has a dream of studying in a reputed IIT. Such is the reputation of IITs in India. In fact, during the campus placement session in IITs, most of the globally leading tech companies, including Google, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Uber, Qualcomm, Intel, Adobe, etc visit India to recruit engineers from top IITs and other leading institutes and offer high salary packages.

IITs are also popular internationally not only due to their contribution towards science & technology and research but also due to their extremely low acceptance rate. To enter an IIT one has to qualify one of the toughest entrance examination in India, i.e. JEE Advanced (previously known as IIT-JEE). Not everyone can appear for this examination, only those who qualify JEE Mains (previously known as AIEEE) are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced.
Around 1.2 million students apply for JEE Mains, out of which around 200,000 students are selected and are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. Out of these students around 30,000 students qualify JEE Advanced. Only the top 10,000 students get the opportunity to enter an IIT.
Acceptance rate ~ 0.83%

Currently there are around 23 IITs out of which 16 IITs were established after 2002. Hence to enter an old and reputed IIT with a desirable branch, a general* category student must have an AIR less than 3000 (AIR stands for All India Rank) (* As there are reservations for some backward castes in India). Even after AIR 3000, students can enter top IITs but with branches having lower preference among the students. Hence, Acceptance rate (Top IITs with popular branches) ~ 0.2%

Currently the list of top 5 IITs with highest preference include :
1) IIT Bombay - 2nd IIT (Estd. 1958)
2) IIT Delhi - 5th IIT (Estd. 1961)
3) IIT Madras - 3rd IIT (Estd. 1959)
4) IIT Kanpur - 4th IIT (Estd. 1959)
5) IIT Kharagpur - 1st IIT (Estd. 1951)
